There’s something about September in the Philippines.

The calendar says Christmas is still months away, but the moment the Ber months arrive, you can already feel it.

Christmas songs start playing in the malls. Parols and twinkling lights slowly appear. Families begin talking about holiday plans and Noche Buena.

And, of course, Jose Mari Chan starts appearing everywhere. 😄🎄

The memes come first. Then you hear that familiar Christmas music.

“Whenever I see girls and boys…”

And every Filipino knows what that means.

Christmas Starts Early in the Philippines

For Filipinos, Christmas has never been just one day in December.

September is when the excitement begins. October brings more decorations. By November, Christmas is everywhere. And December? That’s when everything comes together—Simbang Gabi, reunions, parties, gifts, and tables full of food.

It’s a long celebration, but maybe that’s what makes Filipino Christmas so special.

We don’t rush it.

We enjoy the feeling of Christmas coming home.

And There’s Always Food ❤️

Of course, no Filipino Christmas would be complete without food.

Bibingka and puto bumbong after Simbang Gabi. Ham and queso de bola for Noche Buena. Spaghetti, pancit, lumpia, leche flan—and all those little Filipino treats sitting around the house, waiting for someone to open them.

Polvoron on the table.

Dried mangoes in the pantry.

Something crispy for merienda.

And that jar someone said was “for Christmas” that’s somehow already half-empty by October. 😂

Sometimes, all it takes is one familiar taste to bring back a memory.

Christmas at Lola’s house. Cousins everywhere. Titas telling you to eat some more. Titos telling the same stories. Kids waiting for their aguinaldo.

And, naturally, somebody singing karaoke in the background.

A Little Closer to Home 🇵🇭

For Filipinos living far from the Philippines, the Ber months can make us miss home a little more.
